A BRIEF INTRO TO VENEZUELA

Its background, geography, government, people, and economy

BACKGROUND

. Surfaced in 1830 from the fall of Gran Columbia. In the beginning it was ruled mainly by military men. Hugo Chavez was the first president was elected in 1999 and stayed president until his death in 2013. Chavez was followed, as president, by the person of his choice, Nicolas Maduro. Many issues have continued torise since this time

GEOGRAPHY.

South America. Capital city is Caracas. Located between Columbia and Guyana. Total area is 912,050 sq. km. Andes Mountains, Maracaibo Lowlands, Llanos, Guiana Highlands. GOVERNMENT

. Full form of Venezuela is “Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela”. The type of government is a Federal Presidential Republic. 23 states in Venezuela. Gained independence from Spain on July5, 1811. Has had multiple constitutions in history and many amendments have been made in recent years. Executive, Legislative, and Judicial Branches of government. Law uses Spanish Civil Code. Current chief of state and head of government is Nicolas Maduro. Vice president is Aristobulo Isturiz

PEOPLE. Population of 30,912,302 people. 2.916 million people within Caracas itself. 96% of people follow the Roman Catholic religion, 2% are Protestant, and 2% other. Many Venezuelans want to immigrate to other nations due to problems within Venezuela. Many ethnic groups including, Spanish, Portuguese, and Arab, amongst others. Official language is Spanish. Total population literacy rate of 96.3%

ECONOMY.

Currency is the Venezuelan Bolívar. Mainly based on oil. Main industries include, petroleum and oil, agricultural products, raw materials, machinery, construction materials, pharmaceuticals, etc.. Products produced from agriculture, corn, rice, bananas, sugarcane, etc.. Labor force of 14.16 million people. 32.1% of people are BPL (belowpoverty line). Partner countries for imports and exports include U.S.A (largest), India, China, Cuba, Brazil, Colombia, and Mexico

VENEZUELA’S CURRENT ECONOMIC CRISIS Following the drastic decreaseof oil prices in recent years

TURMOIL. Economy is highly dependent upon oil. Oil prices have decreased recently. Since 2013, Venezuela has been facing an economic crisis, whose severity has increased a lot. Hugo Chavez died in 2013, which caused his chosen successor. Maduro to become president, but many people opposed Maduro. Protests continue to rise against President Maduro causes more issues. The economic crisis continues today

CONCERNS.

Food shortages cause many peopleto starve or look for food in the garbage. Medicine shortages cause hospitals to face issues. Political unrest is caused with many people against President Maduro, some even declaring that they want his resignation. Basic products like toilet paper, detergent, and razors, have been subjects to high inflation. If this economic crisis continues, Venezuela is sure to continue to face many major problems.

SEEKING A SOLUTION.

President Maduro recently tried making efforts to help fight the economic crisis byissuing a Venezuelan currency devaluation, and putting a rise on petroleum prices. The rise of petroleum prices imposed by Maduro in February 2016 was the first of its kind in 20 years. Maduro has continued to try to help end Venezuela’s overall crisis by trying to havethe constitution rewritten, amongst other measures. But, the efforts made by Maduro didn’t stop the crisis. Thousands of people protest against Maduro accusing him of being the cause of the economic crisis. Many people have been injured or killed in these protests
