Student Council: the ICademy Student Government... What Have We Been Up To?
Student Council is K12 iCademy’s student governing body. Student Council serves as a way for students to take suggestions from other students about changes and improvements they would like to see in the school, and leaving a lasting legacy. “[Being a Student Council officer] allows me to connect with many great students and teachers that I would not have known if I had not joined the Student Council. It also gives me some leadership opportunities that I can use throughout my life,” Nicholas R., the Vice President of Student Council observed. “I like the ability to listen to the suggestions of other students and apply the ideas to the policy of the school.”
The Student Council held a successful Open Forum on March 9. Many students attended, adding their ideas and suggestions for how to improve school life and how to make our school a better place. Among the ideas pitched in were increased communication abilities with other students and a way to contact them.
When Rachael Hannah went out and interviewed Nicholas, she asked him about student participation at the Open Forum. “While I would have liked to see some more students there, I am glad that some students could attend and get something out of the event. The students there gave a lot of great feedback and recommendations that we can use in the future,” he explained.
“[The most fulfilling experience in leading the Open Forum was] more practice at public speaking. I am also glad that the students could give their suggestions to the Student Council.”
When asked if any of the suggestions by students at the Open Forum really stood out to him, he responded, “I think that a great suggestion from a past open forum was another way for students to give their ideas in addition to class connects, such as an online session.”
Currently, Student Council is hosting a reboot of the Mascot Image Contest. As chosen by K12 students last year, the K12 iCademy Mascot is the Wolf. Submissions are due no later than March 24th. Please enter while you still can! Winners will be announced during Spirit Week.
Spirit Week will be the week of April 10, or the week before Spring Break. It will feature activities to allow students to experience school spirit that will involve our mascot, the International Academy Wolf. In addition, students will get to submit photos of themselves doing the spirit week activities to one of the Student Council faculty advisors. This will be a great way to bring the school body together by fostering school spirit.
When asked if he would run for Student Council again, Nicholas replied affirmatively. “It would definitely be something I will consider next year, due to all of the opportunities that it opens up, and the chance to benefit the school community.”
