Trump Nominates Neil Gorsuch for U.S. Supreme Court
On Tuesday January 31st, President of the United States Donald Trump nominated Judge Neil Gorsuch as a justice for the Supreme Court. Mr. Gorsuch is currently a judge on an appellate court; his name had previously been touted by Mr. Trump. Mr. Gorsuch will be filling the nearly year-long vacancy left on the Supreme Court as a result of Antonin Scalia’s death. After Mr. Trump’s formal announcement, Mr. Gorsuch praised Mr. Scalia, calling him “a lion of the law”.
Mr. Gorsuch has taken a conservative stance on issues of religion with decisions concerning the contraception mandate of the Affordable Care Act as well as publicly displayed Christian monuments.
The New York Times describes Mr. Gorsuch as an “originalist” with a desire to view the Constitution as it would have been understood when it was written.
