Student Council at K12: An Overview

Student Council at K12 is an organization that serves the school by making sure that there are many opportunities for students to interact within the school, and improving school atmosphere while promoting school spirit among students.

Student Council provides an excellent opportunity for students who would like to take a leadership role in changing the school. There are many different things that Student Council does over the school year, including hosting a variety of activities from which the student body can benefit.

Last year, Student Council was in charge of setting up Spirit Week and initiating the Mascot Image Challenge, as well as selecting a school mascot to help students show more school spirit. In addition, Student Council rolls out a newsletter and sets up an interactive session that allows high school students to participate and voice their opinions on what they would like to see Student Council do for the school.

“My experience with Student Council has been really inspiring,” Liana H., the current president of Student Council said. “I love contributing my ideas and time to bring about changes that the student body would like to see in the school.

Not only that, but Student Council is a valuable organization that serves to improve our school and initiate more camaraderie between students. However, this cannot be achieved unless the student body is willing to run for Student Council positions and work with Student Council in order to ensure that everything is run smoothly.

“I would run for Student Council again because it is a great opportunity to contribute my ideas to the school, work closely with other students in improving the school experience, and learn leadership skills,” Liana explained, citing why she would love the chance to run for Student Council again.

Fortunately for students planning to run for a position, Student Council usually holds two elections for positions, one in the fall, and one in the spring. As is expected, spring elections for the upcoming school year are set to be held at the end of the semester.

“To someone who is thinking about running for Student Council, I would say that you should definitely try it. We would love to see your ideas and talents in action in Student Council. Also, being an officer is a great experience in community and leadership,” Liana continued.

There are currently five Student Council faculty advisors. The faculty advisors are Mrs. Oates-Robesch, Mrs. Bartlett, Ms. Matuza, Ms. Chastain, and Sra. Stahlhut. The Student Council faculty advisors serve an important role in setting up meetings and overseeing and organizing events, as well as ensuring that Student Council activities and events run smoothly. In addition, Student Council has --- officers. The Student Council president is Liana H., the vice president is Nicholas R., the Historian is Rachael Hannah, the At-Large Representative is McKenna S., the 9th Grade Representative is Claire R., and the 10th Grade Representative is Fatima Y.

One way to serve the school is to run for a Student Council position, and even if this is not possible, to attend Student Council events such as open forums and election conventions to support Student Council and the student body. K12 International Academy is a school that serves the interests of the student body, providing many opportunities to join clubs, activities, and to excel as a student and person. And one such way to do so is to be the change in the school.

On January 19, the Student Council held their first Open Forum. Many students discussed what they wanted to see in the future of the school. This occurred under the leadership of Ms. Matuza, Nicholas R., and Rachael Hannah. It was very successful, as it reintroduced the bringing back of the Mascot Image Challenge. In the upcoming weeks, be sure to check your email for the Student Council newsletter as well as more information on the Mascot Image Challenge. If you are interested in joining Student Council, don’t hesitate to email one of the Student Council faculty advisors.
