Donald Trump has secured enough electoral votes to become President-elect of the United States. In 2017, Mr. Trump will be inaugurated as the 45th President of the United States. Although, as of this writing, not all states have yet been called, Mr. Trump obtained significant victories in battleground (highly competitive) states as well as scoring some surprising wins, such as in the Rust Belt state of Pennsylvania.
Pennsylvania may be considered an upset for two primary reasons. Firstly, the Real Clear Politics average of polls, ranged from October 29th to November 5th, gave Democratic Presidential Candidate Hillary Clinton a two percent edge. A number of individual polls taken through late October and early November also placed Mrs. Clinton ahead. Secondly, no Republican Presidential Candidate has won Pennsylvania in a general election since then-Vice President George H. W. Bush defeated Democratic Candidate Michael Dukakis in the state in the 1988 Presidential election.
Mr. Trump also emerged as triumphant in the states of Florida and Ohio. Other than Pennsylvania, Mr. Trump seized another Democratic state, Wisconsin, which has not favored the Republican in a general election since 1984. Although it seems that Michigan has not been officially called, Mr. Trump holds a narrow lead in the state. Like Pennsylvania, Michigan has not voted for the Republican Presidential Candidate in a general election since the 1988 Presidential election. Minnesota has not been officially called and, while Mrs. Clinton holds an early lead in the state, Mr. Trump has put up a competitive fight. The last time Minnesota favored the Republican Presidential Candidate was 1972. Overall, according to The New York Times, Mr. Trump obtained 279 electoral votes and, according to CNN, Mr. Trump holds 289 electoral votes.
In New York City, Mr. Trump gave a speech acknowledging his victory. He struck a courteous tone toward his former opponent Hillary Clinton saying that Americans should appreciate her public service. Mr. Trump also took the time to thank his family, including his late parents. After acknowledging his family, Mr. Trump inserted a memorable line by light-heartedly saying, “This political stuff is nasty, and it’s tough.” Charles Krauthammer, of Fox News, said Donald Trump’s triumphs throughout the country represent an “ideological and electoral revolution of the kind we have not seen since Reagan.”
