Recently, I found myself at Barnes & Noble, browsing around aimlessly. My purpose was just to have a nice walk around the store, but, being the reckless book-buyer I am, I ended up purchasing about 5 books that day. I am well aware that I bought way more books than needed (since I still have about 6 books on my To Be Read list,) but in my defense these books looked awesome! Among my book-filled bag, there sat a trilogy written by Allie Condie, an author I absolutely love. Therefore, for November’s Book Recommendation I chose the book Matched by Allie Condie.
This is a Young Adult Fiction book set in a highly controlled dystopian community. This fictional place is referred to as the “Society,” and is run by a government which commands everything from what you eat to when you go to sleep. The most scandalous decision they have control over, though, is who you marry and love! At the age of 17, teenagers in the Society are “matched” to whom the government believes is the appropriate person. This book is written in first point of view and follows 17-year old Cassia Reyes who is matched to her best friend, Xander Carrow. When Cassia plays her micro-card, a card that shows all information from her match, the screen flickers and reveals a different boy — Ky Markham. Cassia is left confused as she begins to wonder about her match, her freedom, and if the Society is what it truly seems to be.
After reading this book I gave it a 4.5/5 rating because I loved the different takes on a dystopian community and the growth of characters that you can witness in the story. Anyone who loves a good action-filled romance story, with a little bit of mystery, will definitely enjoy this book. As I said before, this is a YA book so the target audience is the teenager population; I would say this book is appropriate for ages 12 and up. To wrap this up, let me know in the comments below if you’ve read this book or if you’re planning on going through the trilogy! ————————————————————————————————————
