Student Council Elections! Get Involved, Folks!

Getting off to a fast start, on the 24th of September at 3:00 PM EST, the Student Council (SC) held their first meeting of the school year. In addition to the council’s elected student representatives were club sponsors and the International Academy’s Principal Miriam Rube. The purpose of the meeting was to outline what was needed for a student to run for an elected office. The Student Council invited all high school students interested to consider the at-large representative, and any freshman to consider running for 9th grade and 12th grade representative. They also cautioned that candidate applications must be turned in by the October 8th deadline to Ms. Colleen Oates-Robesch via kmail.

After a brief introduction of the officers via icebreaker, the moderators moved onto the agenda of the meeting. To start, they discussed the roles and responsibilities of anyone deciding to run for office.

They started the business section of the meeting by discussing the duties of all SC members. Emma Kindschy, 10th Grade Representative, and Tyler Baum, President, led a large part of this section along with Mrs. Oates-Robesch. In short, members must attend all meetings held twice a month at 3:00 PM EST, usually for about 30 minutes. It is also required of members to attend all Student Council sponsored events.

Class Representatives have important roles to play in the SC. Everyone has a purpose. Some would open forums, and would report the feedback to the Council after receiving suggestions from the student body. The last requirement of student council representatives is that they need to be a part of and participate in more than one committee. One such committee was the creation of newsletters and informing clubs about what the Student Council can do for them. Ergo, a member could be asked to reach out to other clubs to do perhaps a one minute presentation about what the student council can offer them. If students do not attend scheduled meetings twice, they could be removed. Finally, moderators opened the floor for questions.

Moderators led potential new Student Council members into the next phase of their meeting – elections and how to be a candidate for voting. The positions that were open for election were the 9th grade, 12th grade, and an at-large representative.

After the participant is elected, they would send in both a photo and a short statement. The statement should be no more than 200 words, for both the newsletter and the convention video. During the final stage of the meeting, Moderator Oates-Robesch gave the outline for teacher recommendations to students. They also explained that the vote would be done over a google ballot.

Before ending, moderators paused for questions one final time. Encouraging, warm, and welcoming are the words one could best use to describe the friendly atmosphere set by all. In short, the message from the current Student Council could be summed up in three words: Get Involved, Folks! This is one club not to miss!
