I won the Crow Wing County 4H Reserve Grand Champion with my rabbit Ophelia. My rabbit Ophelia is a New Zealand breed. I have another rabbit named Hamlette. She is a Havana Otter breed and Hamlette won ribbons at the fair, too. The first thing I ever knew about rabbits is Havana otters come in 4 different colors. They come in black, brown, blue, and broken: broken means that a rabbit comes in two different colors. For example, a rabbit could be both brown and white. Now I am going to tell you how to do a vet check. The first thing you would do is you check the rabbit’s back for abrasions. Then you flip the rabbit over and look at her eyes to check them for any cloudiness. Next, you check her teeth and their nose for green or white boogers. If they have boogers, also called “snuffles,” these could choke them and they would die because they can’t breathe. Keep your rabbits away from other rabbits is my advice because they could be sick. After you have checked all that, you flip the rabbit over again and you check the ears for ear mites. After that, you check their belly for abrasions. Finally, you tell your judge if you have a male or female rabbit, and how to check if they are a boy or a girl. Female rabbits go with female rabbits and male rabbits go with male rabbits. Now, you probably want to know why male rabbits have to stay away from female rabbits; it’s because the male rabbits seems to be more aggressive then the female rabbits. Some people want to breed their rabbits, but there are some special things you should know. The first thing you would do is you leave a male rabbit with a female rabbit for at least 30 minutes. Some people like to breed their rabbits hour after hour but my advice is to breed yours for 3 times. That way you can make sure you have lots of baby rabbits which leads to the success of the breeding. After your rabbit is pregnant, it is important to give her lots of food, and keep her in complete silence. The way to tell if your rabbit is pregnant is to feel her belly for grape size babies. It takes 28-31 days for a mama rabbit to give birth. One way you can remember it because it is the same number as the number of teeth they have. New born baby rabbits are less obedient then older rabbits and they are harder to litter train than older rabbits. They are very cute, but they need lots of attention and they should see the veterinarian to make sure they are healthy. You should try to have a baby bunny because I love them and I think that you will love them also. You should join 4-H first so that you can learn all about them.
